He has written over 40 books and is a joint winner of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History (for his 2011 book Bad Characters, on Sex, Crime, Mutiny, Murder and Australia in the Great War). Professor Stanley is Research Professor at UNSW. That will make clear his method (essentially ‘military-social history, seeking to unite the too-often disparate ‘military’ and ‘social-cultural’ approaches), with a particular concern to acknowledge and incorporate ‘Indian’ evidence, perspective or experience.

Rather than focusing on one aspect in detail, he will survey the book’s 20 chapters by briefly considering a key contemporary image from each. Peter is finishing a book, to be published by Helion, which explores the military forces of British India in the three decades 1824-57.
